The Ultimate Guide to Seoul’s Climate Card: Unlimited Transit for Tourists

Have you ever found yourself constantly reloading your T-money card while exploring Seoul, worrying about how much you’re spending on transportation?

If you’re planning a trip to Seoul, getting around just got a whole lot easier—and cheaper! The Seoul Metropolitan Government has introduced the Climate Card (기후동행카드), an unlimited transit pass that is an absolute game-changer for both locals and tourists. Whether you’re here for a quick weekend getaway or a month-long adventure, this card will save you time, money, and the hassle of calculating fares.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Climate Card: what it is, how much it costs, where to buy it, and some insider tips to make the most out of your Seoul journey.

What is the Seoul Climate Card?

The Climate Card is an all-inclusive transportation pass that grants you unlimited rides on Seoul’s public transit system. This includes subways, city buses, town buses, and even the Ttareungi (Seoul’s public bicycles) and the new Hangang River Buses .

Unlike the traditional T-money card where you pay per ride, the Climate Card allows you to pay a flat fee upfront for a specific number of days. It’s the perfect solution for travelers who plan to hop around the city, visiting multiple attractions in a single day.

Where Can You Use It?

The coverage is extensive, but there are a few boundaries to keep in mind:

•Included: All Seoul-based subway lines (Lines 1-9, Ui-Sinseol, Sillim, Gimpo Goldline, etc.), Seoul-licensed city and town buses, and Seoul public bikes (Ttareungi) .

•Excluded: The Sinbundang Line, subways outside the Seoul area (like parts of Gyeonggi-do), and intercity or airport buses .

Insider Tip: If you take a Seoul-licensed bus, you can still use the Climate Card even if you get off outside of Seoul! However, for subways, if you travel outside the designated Seoul zone, you will have to pay the extra fare to the station attendant when you exit .

How Much Does It Cost? (Tourist Short-Term Passes)

Seoul recently introduced short-term passes specifically designed for tourists. You can choose the duration that best fits your itinerary. Here are the prices for the short-term physical cards (excluding Ttareungi and Hangang Bus options which are mostly for 30-day passes):

Pass TypePrice (KRW)Perfect For…
1-Day Pass5,000 KRWA quick layover or a jam-packed day of sightseeing.
2-Day Pass8,000 KRWA weekend getaway.
3-Day Pass10,000 KRWA standard short trip to Seoul.
5-Day Pass15,000 KRWExploring Seoul at a relaxed pace.
7-Day Pass20,000 KRWA full week of deep-diving into Korean culture.

Note: The physical card itself costs an additional 3,000 KRW .

To put this into perspective, a standard subway ride costs about 1,400 KRW. If you buy a 3-day pass for 10,000 KRW, you only need to take the subway about 8 times over three days to break even. If you’re visiting places like Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, you’ll easily exceed that!

How to Buy and Recharge Your Climate Card

Getting your hands on a Climate Card is straightforward, but there are a few specific steps you need to follow as a foreigner.

1. Where to Buy the Physical Card

As a tourist, you will need to purchase a physical card (mobile cards are currently only available for Android users with Korean bank accounts/authentication).

You can buy the physical card for 3,000 KRW at:

•Customer Safety Centers (Information Desks) inside subway stations on Lines 1-8 .

•Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Emart24) located near subway stations .

•Seoul Tourism Plaza or Myeongdong Tourist Information Center.

2. How to Recharge (Top-Up)

Once you have the physical card, you need to load it with your desired pass (1-day, 3-day, etc.).

•Head to a Ticket Vending and Card Reload Device located inside any subway station (Lines 1-8, Line 9, Ui-Sinseol, Sillim Line) .

•Place your card on the reader, select your language (English is available!), and choose the pass duration.

•Payment: Historically, this was cash-only. However, as of recently, you can now use international credit and debit cards to recharge your Climate Card! This is a massive upgrade for tourists who don’t want to carry too much cash.

Insider Tip: The validity of your short-term pass begins on the exact day you charge it. For example, if you charge a 1-day pass on Monday at 8 PM, it is only valid until the last train/bus on that same Monday night. Do not charge the card in advance! Wait until the morning of the day you plan to start using it .

Why You Absolutely Need This Card

1.Zero Stress: No more fumbling for cash or worrying about transfer times. Just tap and go.

2.Budget-Friendly: If you are an active traveler, this card will save you a significant amount of money.

3.Convenience: With international card payments now accepted at top-up machines, it’s easier than ever to get started.
